What Willa had in mind was a costume of a fashionable lady complete with a wig and stage paint. In a hour, she’d transformed Tilly back into the Charlene Crabtree of her childhood. When she was finished, the two of them stood before Willa’s dressing mirror and gazed at her creation.

A stunning creature gazed back at them. She wore a gauzy green ball gown with more layers and flounces than Tilly could count. What seemed like miles of white lace and ribbons edged her throat and the cuffs of her sleeves. Her full skirts where delightfully poufed with layers of petticoats. Since she was a few inches shorter than Willa, it had required some clever cinching at the waist and a pair of high heeled boots to keep her from tripping on the fabric. A dark wig piled into a complicated array of twists and curls completed her ensemble and provided a dramatic contrast to her porcelain complexion. A bit of clever powder and paint hid her freckles and stamped a coy beauty patch above her lip. A dab of red on her cheeks and mouth turned her into a china doll that would be sure to turn heads.

Willa pursed her lips in concentration.“I’ll have my tailor alter a few more gowns to give you some choices.”

“That won’t be necessary. You’ve been generous enough.” Tilly couldn’t believe she was the lovely creature reflected in the mirror. In all her years of playing dress up as a child, nothing compared to the pleasure of wearing a real silk gown and miles of petticoats.

“Pshaw!” Willa rolled her eyes. “You’re a star now, remember? Charlene Crabtree needs more than one gown, and that is that.” She dusted her hands. “Can you sing, love?”

Tilly shrugged. “A little, I suppose.”

“I little can go a long way on stage. Sing me the first few lines of Amazing Grace.”

After all they’d been through in the past few hours, she was able to inject a fervor in the song she’d never felt before.

Willa watched her in amazement and didn’t give her the cue to stop until she completed the entire chorus. She clapped her hands. “Yes, indeed, Charlene Crabtree. A star has been born this very night in this very room. I cannot wait to introduce you to the acting staff at Castellano’s. They are going to adore you!”
